So I have a friend who wants to make a game app for smart phones, and he's requested me to draw for it! I'm pretty excited and all, but I just need to know information on copyright and stuff.

It's not that I don't trust him, but from a purely business point of view, I want my fair share for my work.

So… how does copyright for this stuff work? Making it official and all.. I've never done art commercially before! And I don't really want this to be work-for-hire..

I'm supposed to give him a sketch of a character select screen soon, but I don't know if copyrights will extend to that or not….!

Hmmm well it depends on your contract or written agreement with each other. Of course, no matter what, he still has to credit you for your work. If not, that is copyright infringement unless you specify that you don't need to be credited. For payment, you could receive money initially after drawing for him for that app, it's up to the terms of the contract if you wish a percentage of money from the sales of that app or not, idk up to you xD;

although, you cannot use those designs you created for the app anymore and claim it as your own. It belongs to that friend of yours now. That's how I understood copyright in terms of selling concept designs to game creators.
